This February I discovered the dream vacation for myself, Field Trip. It’s a 5-day workshop for photographers in California with around 500 participants at El Capitan Canyon near Santa Barbara. There are classes, photo walks, demonstrations, discussions and panels happening throughout the day and even at night. You can pick from a variety of classes you want to attend that range from more specific and practical to more general and abstract. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the latter, but ended up enjoying those classes the most. We got to talk about big issues and art and life in general. It made me think about the big picture and what’s important in life and try to bring it to my approach to photographing. I found it very valuable. And fun!
The best part is that you are surrounded by like-minded individuals from all over the US and abroad and you get to meet so many cool people! You take classes together, eat meals, share accommodations and it makes it easier to begin friendships and have deep conversations by the campfire. It felt like the best possible photo camp vacation! The teachers are very approachable, too, which is amazing. It was awesome to become a part of this community. And for an East Coaster, it doesn’t hurt that it takes place in California and the location is super gorgeous!!! It’s nice to escape Philly in February. Here are some images from this year’s Field Trip. I’m definitely coming back next year!
